How to Get Rid of Cat Dander in Your Home

Cat dander isn't the hair. It's the flakes of skin and the protein in a cat's saliva that dry onto everything, and the protein, called Fel d 1, is what sets people sneezing.

The awkward part is that it's light and it's sticky. It floats, lands on the carpet, the sofa and the bedding, and then it clings. Far longer than most people expect.

How do you get rid of cat dander?

You reduce it, steadily, from every soft surface at once. Do only the carpet and the dander just resettles off the sofa.

No single job clears it. A few done together make a real dent, and it helps to know which surface wants what:

Air the rooms daily on top of that. Fresh air moving through carries a surprising amount of it out.

And don't lean on dry vacuuming alone, because dander works its way down to the base of the pile, below where suction reaches, which is the same reason a carpet can look spotless and still hold plenty of it.

Does carpet cleaning remove cat dander?

It clears a large share of what's built up deep in the pile, the part a vacuum never reaches. It won't keep a home with a cat dander-free, though. Think of a deep clean as emptying the reservoir, not sealing the tap.
